Campbell Utilizes Strong Rushing Attack In 29-10 Win Over The Citadel

Campbell entered the 2022 season as one of the biggest unknowns in FCS Football due to the success on the recruiting trail for Mike Minter and his staff. The Camels had a resounding answer for most of their doubters in an impressive Week 1 win over The Citadel in front of their home crowd in Buies Creek, NC.

The Camels rushed for almost 200 yards and averaged over 5 yards per carry as team against The Citadel on Thursday night. RB Bryant Barr led the team with 107 yards and 1 rushing touchdown, which was the first 100-yard rushing game in his career. Lamagea McDowell and DeAnte Jackson combined for 72 rushing yards and 1 rushing touchdown in their reserve roles for the Camels.

All-Conference QB Hajj-Malik Williams made his return from injury and had a solid night for the Camels through the air. Williams completed 57% of his passes for 175 passing yards and 1 touchdown. Ezeriah Anderson was the top target for Williams against The Citadel and led the team with 4 receptions for 65 receiving yards and 1 touchdown.

The Citadel struggled to find much offensive consistency against a talented Campbell defensive line. The Bulldogs were held to under 200 yards rushing and averaged less than 4 yards per carry on the night. The Camels defense forced three turnovers, including two costly interceptions from QB Peyton Derrick. All-Conference LB CJ Tillman led the Camels with 11 total tackles, while Josh Johnson led the defense with 3 tackles for loss.

Campbell moves to 1-0 on the season and travels to face future CAA conference foe William & Mary in a highly anticipated Week 2 matchup. The Citadel falls to 0-1 and will host defending SoCon conference champions East Tennessee State in an extremely important conference matchup.
