Newman was a standout at Daphne High School in Daphne, AL in the Class of 2018. He was a two-time All-County & All-Coastal selection, along with being named the Academic Athlete of the Year at Daphne. Newman passed for over 4,000 yards and 47 touchdowns as a senior.

Jackson State, VMI, & Alabama State were the only teams to offer Newman out of high school and he chose to take his talents to VMI in March of 2018. At VMI, Newman played in eight games and totaled over 300 yards passing and 3 touchdowns. He was also named to the SoCon Academic Honor Roll in both 2018 & 2019. Newman transferred to Jacksonville State in the fall of 2020 and only saw action in three games during the spring season of 2021 due to a crowded QB room at Jacksonville State.

Quarterback was an extremely important need for Northwestern State this offseason after a tough 3-8 season in 2021. The QB play was inconsistent with multiple QBs seeing significant action last season, including Kaleb Fletcher & Zachary Clement. Fletcher & Clement totaled over 3,000 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, & 14 interceptions throughout the 2021 season. Newman will have two years of eligibility left at Northwestern State and look to compete for the QB1 position for the Demon.
